Marmalade Sandwich is a new brand of hats, launched in 2026, designed to mix colour and joy with practicality. Designed and made in the UK from surplus, vintage, and upcycled fabrics, we make short run, limited editions of our lovely hats, moving to the next gorgeous colour or print when one piece of fabric’s all gone. Expanding our manufacturing from cottage industry to medium-scale UK production means that our great designs can now be available everywhere. Our waxed cotton and wool hats spring up in many checks, tweeds and plaids, mixed with sturdy waterproof cotton in traditional colours. Our cotton and linen hats are dyed for us in small batches in Yorkshire. Our woolly hats are made from pre-loved jumpers, and all of our trims are individually made from off-cuts we can’t bear to throw away.
Our designer Alison Tutcher has been making hats for more than 30 years. A chance change in the egg trade, ruined by Edwina Curry in 1988 led to an empty market stall and an idea to make hats to sell. These early days were inspiring and directional. After taking evening classes Alison then had lessons with Couture Milliner Jane Cave, and set up in Greenwich market for a time before moving to Lyme Regis in Dorset. Here she had a bespoke millinery shop for more than twenty years, creating and selling unique hats across the country and online.
Marmalade Sandwich hats nod to the sassy styling of the 1920s. We like snug, soft cloche brims that keep ears warm, and deep domed crowns with wider brims that are super flattering and good against the weather. Narrow at the back, they don’t interfere with your collar in the winter; wide and elegant all round, our summer hats offer great sun protection. These jazz-age classics are both nostalgic and contemporary.
On our way to the 21st century we then jump a few decades, adding a touch of duffle-coat charm from Paddington Bear (not that our hats look like his!) From the heyday of department stores and black cabs, we keep our logo under our hats where he kept his (essential!) marmalade sandwich.
Now in 2026 our contemporary hats are wearable everyday, they squash and they pack away. They’re smart enough to get you noticed, but not too glamorous you can’t wear them walking the dog.
They come in four sizes, all cut proportionally, all with internal adjustable fittings.
